Difference Between Smoke Tube Boiler And Water Tube Boiler

Smoke tube boiler and water tube boiler are the main types of industrial boiler in global market. They are differ from not only structure, but also usage.

Smoke tube boiler

Smoke tube boiler, as its name suggests, of which smoke or heat flowing through boiler tubes and the water surrounds outside of the tubes to be heated and turned into steam. This type of boilers are generally used for industries that need not super-heated steam for production process. This boiler is also called fire tube boiler, fire tube shell boiler. Three pass fire tube boiler and waste heat recovery boiler are the common smoke tube steam boiler.

Water tube boiler

Contrary to smoke tube boilers, water tube boilers are that in which water circulates in tubes. Fuel is burned inside the furnace, creating hot gas which heats water in the steam-generating tubes. This boilers include Π type water tube boiler, some waste heat recovery boiler and D type water tube boiler. D type packaged steam boiler is designed with a capacity up to 65 t/h. Π type CFB Boiler and waste heat recovery boiler usually be designed with large capacity for small and medium enterprises self power supply and thermal power plant, building heating.

Difference on Features

1. Smoke tube boilers have a simple structure and a large volume of water and steam and good adaptability to changes in load, the water quality requirements is lower than the water tube boilers. So they are usually used in small businesses on the production process and life heating. For water tube boilers, the heating surface layout is convenient, they also have a good heat transfer performance. The structure can be used for condition that need a large capacity and high parameters. However, a higher level of water quality and operation is required.
2. The pressure of water tube boilers can adapt to a wider scope, even can break through the pressure limit and meet more than 2.5MPa steam requirements. Smoke tube boilers are restricted by the thickness and pressure of material wall so that the pressure can only reaches to 2.5MPa or lower.
3. The capacity of most smoke tube boilers are 35t/h or lower, but water tube boilers can be made with larger capacity. Generally speaking, the boilers with capacity of 35t/h or larger are usually made with water tube type structure.
