Measures To Keep Power Plant Boiler Clean
A power plant boiler burns biomass, coal, waste heat, gas, oil, but all the fuels will produce ash accumulating on the boiler as slag. Slag deposits will reduce heat transfer, affect power plant boiler efficiency and even cause accidents. Therefore, to clean the slag is very necessary and we have some measures to keep power plant boiler clean.
Acoustic Cleaning
Acoustic cleaning is a technique that has become popular across industries that handle and store bulk granular and particulate materials. In an acoustic cleaning setup, built-in horns or speakers are used to create sound waves that dislodge particulates. In boiler systems, the waves are used to loosen dry ash buildup.
The main advantage of acoustic cleaning is that it does not need to be directed, like a blower or water jet. Instead, it cleans entire volumes. It is only really effective against dry deposits, though, not having much of an effect on molten ash buildup on boilers.
Soot Blowers
Soot blowers project concentrated jets of compressed air, steam, or water at slag, eroding deposits to eliminate them or keep them in check. Blowers have been around since the 1930s and most power plants today have some sort of soot blowing system.
While advancements in soot blower technology have come a long way over the last nine decades, soot blowers have some fundamental shortcomings. In the first place, all soot blowers can cause tube erosion and weakening if pointed at a clean length of tubing. Air- and steam-based soot blowers can increase the load on the induced draft fan, leading to inefficiency and ID fan failure by adding more gas volume to the system. And cold water–based soot blowers can cause tubes to contract, which, under the wrong circumstances, can lead to a blowout.
